What makes Granite great?

While Quartz worktops are becoming an increasingly popular choice in recent years, granite is still a great option for residential and commercial kitchens alike. Granite is a strong and durable material that – with a little regular care – can be maintained for decades, making it an excellent investment for any property.

Often found in quarries in North and South America, as well as in some regions of Europe, granite is a completely natural, volcanic rock that is cut to-size and finely polished to give a beautiful, non-porous finish. It is stronger than most other commonly-used countertop materials, making it ideal for everyday kitchen use.

While granite might be less customisable in terms of final aesthetic, due to the expertly-polished finish, granite offers a sleek and modern feature to any family kitchen, allowing you to make a bold statement in your home. Granite is often available in a variety of colours, with natural marbling giving each piece a distinct look – and as a naturally-occurring mineral, each slab of granite is entirely unique, with the earth tones finishing any room off perfectly.

Granite can be a highly affordable high-quality option for your kitchen worktops, depending on the style and thickness of your chosen surface. While not cheap - compared to other materials such as wood or laminate - it is very long-lasting, meaning that it will save you money in the long-run (and adds great resale value to your house).

More than this, granite is largely popular due to its’ easy to clean and easy to maintain nature, simply requiring a quick, daily wipe-down with warm soapy water or a gentle antibacterial spray to keep it pristine. Discolouring, water damage and bacteria build-up is highly unlikely with granite – particularly if the surface is polished and sealed (and routinely resealed). This makes it ideal for large, busy households that don’t want to spend a lot of time cleaning after each meal.

Granite is extremely durable and highly-resistant to heat and harm – so no need to worry about burn marks, scratches, cracks or stains every time you’re cooking! Rough-textured or porous granite may produce some light staining or cleaning difficulties (such as with spilled liquids, for example), but generally it is not a problem to maintain as the volcanic material is so naturally hard-wearing.

As you can see, there are numerous benefits of opting for a granite countertop over many other popular materials, but the most important thing is to find a material and style that achieves your desired look.
